FINALIST

YOUNG ARCHITECTS COMPETITIONS

CENTERGROSS, ITALY

2018

It is usually the models on a runway under the spotlights that catch the eyes on a fashion show. However, this is merely tip of the iceberg of the entire fashion industry.

What if the runway breaks into the fashion design studios, sales companies, exhibitions halls, fashion schools, etc. and connect all aspects of fashion industry as an artery?

The existing extensive building with inactivate long corridor would harm the dynamism of contemporary fashion design scenario. Maintaining an indoor corridor with no other use is a waste of space and energy. However, opening up the space would be a great opportunity to bring in activated runway, changing the character of traditional corridor. Introducing a canopy would bring in contemporary aesthetics in the traditional industrial space.

The runway begins from a ramp starting from the existing urban fabric, where the cars can drive up to entrance building, drop off passengers at the elevated level and continue to drive down to parking below. Immediately after arrival, visitors enter the polyvalent space around the conference hall, which is a loop end of the runway. The curve catwalk for fashion shows with panoramic view of Villa Orsi and the town promotes the local history and culture through international events.

The runway merges into the existing center corridor of Centergross buildings. Tearing down the existing roof over corridor, replacing solid partitions with transparent storefront glass, the experience walking through the elongated building becomes transparent and lively. It would be pleasant and appealing for visitors to walk through the space and enjoy the dynamic light and shadow created by the overhead canopy. At the same time, the transparency of fashion design companies or showrooms raises curiosity and attracts more deals. This meanwhile encourages communication between studios at both side of the corridor and promotes public events. Also, open corridor saves the HVAC energy consumption by utilizing natural sunlight and ventilation.

The undulating roof structure splits and creates outdoor space. It also extends like tentacles down to the street level and becomes street furniture. The exposed roof will become green roof, introducing parks over the existing building.  The slits on the canopy in resemblance of tailoring in fashion design, elegantly embraces the old building with new technology.
