Shu Brocade

Chengdu was the starting point of the “Silk Road”, known as “ the city of brocade”. Sichuan Brocade from Chengdu, a cultural heritage with 2,000 years’ history, represents the top level of ancient Chinese handcrafted silk.

Warp and Weft vs. Figure and Ground

Common brocade is woven by two basic components: warp and weft. The longitudinal warp yarns are held stationary in tension on a frame while the transverse weft is drawn through and inserted over-and-under the warp. Transverse weft is used to knit the figure while longitudinal warp is used to knit the ground.

The very unique character of Sichuan Brocade is that the weaving technique is the opposite of that of the common brocade. The longitudinal warp is drawn over and under the stationary transverse weft. Warp makes the figure while weft makes the ground.

The Site

The site is a densely vegetated wetland, with a relatively flat basin at the center and slightly sloped hills at the perimeter.  The basin consists of a one-story masonry and concrete building, a small seasonal pond and low ground-covers. Red maple, goldenrain Trees and Bamboos are grown around the basin.

The existing vegetation and typography are integral to the Linpan vernacular architecture and landscape. The new structure should have minimal impact on the site, in order to preserve the wetland micro environment and biodiversity, as well as the overall picturesque scenery in the Yanqi Wetland in Tianfu New Area.

The Building

The new construction will be light-weighted and has minimum footprint on the ground. Adhering to the priority of vegetation protection, the bucolic landscape characteristics will not be destroyed.

The Roof will be woven using the traditional warp-patterned Sichuan Brocade technique, supported by light gauge steel structure, connecting and forming semi-open space between the existing building and the seasonal pond.

Bright color (Gold) I-mesh linear panels will be drawn over and under a neutral color (white) I-mesh. Overlapping mesh panels create undulating, playful geometry with dynamic natural light trickling down, giving solar protection to outdoor activities.
